Lilian Marguerite Medland 1880-1955
trained and worked for many years as a nurse in England. met Charles Stonham, a senior surgeon at Guy's Hospital where she did her training.

He published The Birds of the British Isles between 1906 and 1911, with her as illustrator. She later married Tom Iredale and did the illustrations for a number of his books..

Charles Stonham 1858-1916
Well respected and successful surgeon at Guys and Westminster Hospitals. who's career was in medicine, but his passion was ornithology.

Information

George Louis Leclerc Buffon. A student of the Academy of Science, Buffon influenced the separation of science from theology, even before Darwin's theory of evolution. He suggested that man and ape may be connected through a scientific, common ancestry. In addition, Buffon challenged existing religious dogmas and acknowledged that new theories were needed, believing that the Earth was more than 6,000 years old.
